Last Sunday, Miami Beach Pride Week culminated with a parade. Among those celebrating was Zion Wade, Dwyane Wade’s 11-year-old son. Dwayne himself was in Toronto for a Heat/Raptors game, but Zion’s stepmom, Gabrielle Union, and his 17-year old brother, Zaire, were there to support him:
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS !! Family Supporting Family. @gabunion @dwyanewade . I Genuinely Love How This Family Enjoy Each Other. #ZionWade had the support of his family, including his step-mom #GabrielleUnion and his older brother #ZaireWade, at the #MiamiBeachPride pic.twitter.com/3GNDd8LWd7

Dwayne was there in spirit. He posted many of the photos to his own IG stories with captions like, “It’s a family thing” and “We support each other with Pride!” I don’t know much about Zion’s mother, but I know Dwayne was given sole custody of the boys after the divorce. As far as I have read, Zion’s mother was not at the celebration in Miami. The only reason to point this out is I have a friend whose son came out when he was 14. The mother is an Evangelical Christian and, although she hasn’t disowned her son, has not made it easy or pleasant for him. His stepmother, however, just like Gabrielle, has been a very vocal and proud supporter and it’s been so heartening to see. (Proud mom brag, these friends are big into the LA Football Club Pride organization and as soon as his friend came out, my son bought a LAFC Pride jersey and wore it to show his support. He was 13 at the time).
Teen Vogue noted that Zion has not publicly said how he identifies, which is why I have not included it. That is not important, what is important is that he has the full support of his family. Obviously, Zion benefits from that love and support but really, everyone does. By accepting our kids as who they are, we get to share fully as they grow into themselves. I love that the Wades let us share in this moment with them.
