Man charged with murder of Marvin Oraiha in Sydneys west

A man has been charged with the murder of low-level gang associate Marvin Oraiha after he was allegedly gunned down in a brazen daylight shooting.

Emergency services were called to Hertfordshire St in Sydney’s Elizabeth Hills on May 22 following reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival they found the 24-year-old suffering several gunshot wounds.

Despite the efforts of police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, Mr Oraiha died at the scene.

Mr Oraiha reportedly told his girlfriend to run for her life in the moments before his death, with bullets smashing through his car window as he sat in the driveway of his parents’ home, The Daily Telegraph reported.

A short time later, emergency services were called again to Cave Close in Green Valley and Lewis St in Bonnyrigg Heights following reports that two cars had been set alight.

All three locations were forensically examined, with police believing them to be linked.

The State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad launched a large-scale investigation in the wake of Mr Oraiha’s death and in June released CCTV of two men they believed could assist police.

Following a lengthy investigation, detectives arrested a 22-year-old man at a home in Roselands on Wednesday.

Simione Sefanaia Lua appeared at Bankstown Local Court on Thursday after he was charged with murder, two counts of taking and driving a car without consent of the owner, possessing an unauthorised pistol and participating in a criminal group.

He did not apply for bail and is due to next appear in court in September.

Criminal Groups Squad commander Detective Acting Superintendent Glyn Baker told reporters that anyone involved in the incident had “blood on his hands”, and police were still hunting for anyone involved.

“The Criminal Group Squad here at State Crime Command have cast a wide net,” he said.

“We are closing that net on organised criminals who are hellbent on committing murder in the city.

“No matter what your involvement is in this crime, you have blood on your hands.

“We know it takes lots of people in lots of different roles to execute these murders.

“So, you’ve all got blood on your hands and we are after everyone involved.”

Superintendent Baker said strike force police had worked tireless and in a short amount of time to make the arrest.

He said police allege the 22-year-old has “direct involvement” before and after Mr Oraiha’s alleged murder.

“We believe that the motive for the killing was directly related to Marvin's links to organised crime,” he said.

“Any specific link between Marvin’s shooting and other organised crime, OMCG murders, we have not established that yet.”

Police also launched six separate subsequent search warrants at addresses in Edensor Park, Green Valley, Yagoona, Liverpool, Merrylands and Guildford, seizing a range of items.

During the searches, police allegedly located ammunition, an extendible baton, gel-blasters, a taser, cloned registration plates, substances believed to be prohibited drugs, clothing, over $3000 in cash, and mobile phones relevant to their investigation.

All the items were seized to undergo further forensic examination.

Investigations under Strike Force Hackenburg will continue.
